Museo Delta Antico

The Museo Delta Antico is located in the heart of Comacchio, a stone’s throw from the Trepponti, the town’s symbolic monument, in a magnificent neoclassical building known as the old Ospedale degli Infermi. Its collection of over two thousand finds tells us the history and evolution of the ancient Po Delta. The great river, called Eridanus by the Greeks and Padus by the Romans, shaped this territory for centuries and made it a fundamental junction for trade and commerce between East and West, all the way to the gates of Europe.

The Museum is divided into themed and chronological sections.

On the ground floor is the Roman section, whose rooms tell of great villas, large necropolises and river routes that connected the Delta with the main Adriatic cities, from Rimini to Aquileia. From there, visitors come across the impressive cargo of a trading ship, shipwrecked some 2000 years ago along the coast. This is the wreck of Valle Ponti. The impressive display of amphorae, lead ingots, ship’s instruments and objects from the daily life of its passengers, in perfect condition, makes the visit unforgettable.

The first floor tells the story of the ancient city of Spina, one of the most important Etruscan emporiums in the Mediterranean and a privileged port for Greek ships in the Adriatic. A city built of wood and clay, which disappeared for centuries and only resurfaced a century ago from the waters of the Comacchio Valleys. Here, gorgeous Attic vases, gold and bronze objects from the four thousand tombs found to this day stand alongside tableware ceramics and objects of everyday life from the town.

Finally, the last section tells us about the town of Comacchio, from its birth in Late Antiquity to its apogee in the Middle Ages. A new emporium, a dynamic commercial reality, capable of controlling traffic and goods towards the East and along the course of the Po River, for all of northern Italy.

It is one of the most important archaeological museums in the Upper Adriatic, welcoming thousands of visitors from Italy and abroad every year. Entirely bilingual (Italian-English), it hosts a series of routes that cater to every need with a view to increasing inclusiveness. Innovative audio and video supports and a series of olfactory installations complete the visual story offered by the exhibits, for a true journey through time.

At the end of the itinerary a tactile bench, housing a selection of authentic artifacts from various eras, allows the emotion of touching history, transforming the visit to the Museo Delta Antico into a true multisensory experience.

Just five minutes from Comacchio, at Stazione Foce, is the open-air section of the Museum, which houses a reconstruction of the Etruscan settlement of Spina. The project, realised through experimental archaeology, allows visitors to perceive live what the ancient Etruscan town must have looked like. The living structures, entirely built with wood, reeds and clay, alternate with streets and canals and contain furniture and furnishings typical of the period. All is set in a unique naturalistic setting, at the gateway to the Valleys, in a place where water and land meet and mingle.
