The Gran Bosco della Mesola, also known as Boscone, is the largest forested area in the province of Ferrara, covering about 1,000 hectares. It is a precious testimony to the ancient lowland forests that once covered the entire Adriatic coastal strip.
Created on the dune cordons formed along the ancient mouths of the Po, the forest has alternating dunes, depressions and wetlands that foster an extraordinary variety of environments: from hygrophilous vegetation to Mediterranean scrub, from arid meadows to marshy areas.
A nature reserve since 1977, the Mesola Forest is known to host the only native nucleus of deer in the Italian peninsula, as well as mammals, reptiles, amphibians and numerous species of passerine birds. A place of great beauty, where nature manifests itself in authentic and primordial forms.
